Have you ever been really pumped about something God spoke to you? You finally decide to share the “great news” with your closest friend, Negative Nancy, and they say everything possible to break your excitement and have you believe you didn’t hear from God. Or maybe you have a prophet speak over your life, but what they spoke was contradictory to what God personally spoke to you?
I heard this story twice within two weeks of one another, and I believe it fits perfectly with this blog. The story I want to use is found in 1 Kings 13. God sends a young prophet to Bethel on an assignment. The Lord tells this prophet to not go back home the way he came and to not eat or drink anything in Bethel. While resting, an older lying prophet from Bethel comes to invite the younger prophet to his house to eat saying, “The Lord spoke to me and said to take you back to my house to eat and drink.” He disobeys what God has spoken to Him based off what a seemingly wiser, “more gifted” man tells him to and dies!
1Kings 13:16-24
So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.”
The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place. I have been told by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’ ”
The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (But he was lying to him.) So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.
While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the old prophet who had brought him back. He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have defied the word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’ ” When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him. As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it.
That is some serious stuff. I don’t care if it is something good or bad, if it does not line up with what God has spoken you or showed you, don’t accept it! It is okay to say thank you and move around; or no thank you. Like I said in the last post, it is your job to foster and go after the things God has spoken to you or shown you. Not everyone will be on board or cheering for it. Surround yourself with the right people, the right counsel, and those who desire God's best for you!
Disobedience and listening to everyone else but God, will mess you up and cause you to encounter some things God never intended for your life. While He can get you back on track and turn the negatives around for your good that He is glorified, you do not want to have unnecessary set backs in your life. Stay the course, follow God, and cut out the contradicting voices, including your own.
